The problem is, every outward sign of depression can easily be something else besides depression.
Most likely, you’ve already seen the commonly listed signs of depression for both men and women: Depressed mood indicated by persistent sadness, anxiousness, or emptiness Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism or self-criticism Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness Loss of interest in hobbies and activities and sex Decreased energy, fatigue, or tiredness Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping Appetite and weight loss, or overeating and weight gain Thoughts of death or suicide or actual suicide attempts Restlessness or irritability Persistent physical symptoms that dont respond to treatment, such as headaches, chronic pain and digestive disorders Perhaps you’re even familiar with the so-called signs of depression in men: Excess aggression or inappropriate rage Increased alcohol consumption or drug use Loss of sexual interest or engaging in sexual affairs Avoiding others (and responsibilities) or obsessive focus on distracting activities Increase of potentially dangerous activities Both of these lists could describe quite a few things other than depression. And to start, you need to know what depression is and isn’t.
Now, I’m not a doctor, and I have no medical training whatsoever. I’m just some guy who healed his own depression (among other problems) and now I consult with others to help them heal their emotional pain. The problem with the medical profession in general is that they’re too caught up in the gravitational pull of the pharmaceutical industry. One of the many symptoms of this pull involves the diagnosis and definition of depression.
I won’t get into the debate of whether or not depression really is a disease caused by a chemical imbalance.
You can read up on that elsewhere if you wish. Instead, I’ll offer you my own theory, and solution, for depression. Depression is caused by shutting down your emotions.
The more you shut them down, the more depressed you end up. Here’s perhaps the most common way it goes: You have angers – little angers – that you’re not allowed to express. For whatever reason, it wouldn’t be prudent to get angry. Like little straws, the repressed anger builds and builds over time.
