The Magician is an Australian mockumentary about the escapades of a hitman in Melbourne. Released in 2005, the film was shot in only 10 days by writer and director Scott Ryan in a tiny budget of three thousand Australian dollars. Nash Edgerton, the famous stuntman and now producer, took the project under his wing after watching it at the St. Kilda Film Festival. The film was subsequently re-released in 2005.
The Magician follows the life of volatile yet charismatic hitman Ryan, filmed by his friend. The film relies heavily on offbeat conversations, dark humor and emotional crisis faced by Ryan, as he goes about threatening violence. Inspiration seems to have been taken from the Morgan Freeman played hitman character, Carden in the hollywood movie "The Contract"
Rotten Tomatoes rated this movie 71% on their Tomatometer. Although the movie did not get a great review from the New York Times, it did get pretty good review from the LA Times, Monsters and Critics, Saint Magazine and Boxoffice magazine.
